he Bainbridge Island School District (BISD) is dedicated to creating a safe and inclusive educational environment for all students, regardless of sex, gender identity, or gender expression. Their mission is to honor and nurture each student’s unique skills, talents, and passions while fostering a welcoming and respectful atmosphere. BISD emphasizes the importance of social and emotional health alongside academic performance, recognizing diversity as a learning tool in a successful inclusive community. District wide, staff are committed to building strong relationships and promoting empathy and critical thinking to support students in life after K-12 education.
In an effort to reduce restraint and eliminate isolation, and to support students’ overall well-being, BISD is deep in the work of social, emotional, and behavioral MTSS tiered supports/systems. Using OSPI’s MTSS framework, BISD is focusing on data in this area of MTSS to use at the forefront of student meetings, team meetings, and district decision-making. BISD continues to solidify SEL curricula and weekly time dedicated to SEL Tier 1 supports K-12. Counselors, social workers, and additional staff support with targeted Tier 2 and Tier 3 SEL work. Staff receive training on best practices such as proactive de-escalation, trauma informed practices, and universal design for learning.
